Data produced by Coast to Capital has revealed the unemployment rate for the area is the lowest it has been since December 2008.

Data produced by Coast to Capital for West Sussex, Brighton & Hove, Lewes, the Gatwick Diamond and Croydon - has revealed the unemployment rate for the area is the lowest it has been since December 2008.

 

The number of people unemployed is now 4.7%, down 0.1% since the last quarter and down 0.8% on the same time last year. The number of people who are unemployed is 48,400 down by 2,000 since the last quarter.

 

Data also shows that 934,100 people are currently in employment in the area. This has fallen by 1,000 since the last quarter, but overall across the LEP region employment has risen in Rural West Sussex, The Gatwick Diamond, West Sussex and the Greater Brighton city region areas.

 

Ron Crank, Chief Executive of Coast to Capital LEP, said: "Employment rates have held steady for the last 18 months, showing the region has a strong, stable, labour market."

During the last year Croydon's unemployment rate has fallen by 1.7% to 6.4%. Rural West Sussex has the lowest unemployment rate at 3.6%, followed by Gatwick Diamond at 3.8%, West Sussex at 4.1%, Coastal West Sussex at 4.2% and the Greater Brighton City Region at 5%.

The number of people claiming job seekers allowance in the Coast to Capital region has also dropped by 1.9% to 14,000. This is a reduction of 3,200 claimants from year on year and a fall of 19%. Both the claimant count and proportion of claimants are at the lowest level since 1992.
