Coast to Capital has submitted ambitious plans to Government to establish Enterprise Zones in Newhaven with the potential to create 2,000 new jobs.

If approved, the new Enterprise Zone will provide an economic boost to the coastal town which will benefit from relaxed planning rules and economic incentives. It will encourage business growth through lower taxes, access to superfast broadband and streamlined planning permission to improve local infrastructure.

In Newhaven, the Enterprise Zone bid covers seven key sites and aims to deliver 70,000 sq m of commercial development supporting around 2,000 new jobs. It will unlock strategic sites for high value development, facilitate new investment and support business expansion. Enterprise Zone designation will also help to create new employment opportunities, including training and apprenticeships in high-growth sectors such as Low Carbon Environmental Goods and Services.

The Newhaven bid, if successful, will also provide a significant benefit to the Greater Brighton City Region, by offering additional space for growth in employment and housing.

Ron Crank, Chief Executive of Coast to Capital LEP, says: "Enterprise Zones drive growth and job creation and are part of the Government's strategy to devolve responsibility for growth to local areas. This development project for Newhaven is key to economic growth in our coastal communities and we are now seeking Government approval to take these plans forward."

Maria Caulfield MP, Member of Parliament for Lewes, said: "An Enterprise Zone for Newhaven would be a fantastic boost to the economic prospects of Newhaven. I have long felt that Newhaven has great potential for the future with its people, the port and the new developments that are coming on stream. I give my full support and backing to this important bid."

Jenny Rowlands, Chief Executive of Lewes District Council, said: "An Enterprise Zone for Newhaven will be an exciting opportunity to build on the town's growing reputation as a centre for Clean, Green and Marine businesses. The recent opening of the UTC@harbourside means we are developing the skills base for these sectors; and the soon to be completed extension to the Enterprise Centre on Denton Island will mean the businesses have somewhere to start and be nurtured. The Enterprise Zone would really allow those companies to grow and develop and bring economic benefits to the town and the region."
