27 March 2015

The Coast to Capital Local Transport Body has given the go-ahead to transport schemes in Brighton & Hove following a consultation and public meetings held on 18 February and 25 March.

This will mean an investment of £13.7 million in the city's infrastructure from April 2015.

The schemes will see investment to improve road junctions, encourage more walking and cycling and reduce congestion.

In Brighton & Hove, a green light has been given to the following schemes:

  • Bike Share Scheme: This would provide up to 430 bikes for hire and 50 docking stations. It would function in a similar way to the Barclays Cycle Hire in London.
  • Valley Gardens Scheme: Costing £10.1 million to build the first two phases, this scheme will improve walking, cycling, public transport and car journeys in the Valley Gardens area of the city centre, creating an attractive, flexible and safe space that enhances its environment.
  • Intelligent Transport Systems: This project will integrate more technology to aid traffic management and ease congestion throughout the city, providing greater information for travellers to reduce congestion, resulting in the more efficient movement of people and vehicles in the city.

The Intelligent Transport Systems and bike share schemes are subject to conditions which are currently being negotiated with the sponsors.

Commenting on the decisions, Ron Crank, chief executive of Coast to Capital said: "We are delighted that Coast to Capital is able to support improvements to Brighton & Hove's roads and sustainable transport infrastructure. We hope these schemes will ease congestion on the City's roads, encouraging sustainable transport and so promote sustainable economic growth."
