27 March 2015

The Coast to Capital LEP Transport Body has given the go-ahead to a number of transport schemes in Surrey following a consultation and public meeting held on 25 March.

This will mean an investment of over £30 million in the county's infrastructure from April 2015.

The schemes will see investment to improve road junctions, encourage more walking and cycling, reduce congestion and help to prevent road closures caused by flooding.

In Surrey, this includes:

  • Proposed resilience schemes to improve the A22 and A24 so they are better able to cope in poor weather conditions, especially flooding.
  • A £3.75 million investment on an East Surrey-wide traffic management scheme which would improve traffic flow, reducing journey times and congestion.
  • A package of transport improvements in Epsom town centre. Costing £3.375 million, this scheme will reduce the impact of traffic congestion by: reverting part of the existing one way system to two way movement; widening footpaths; improving crossings and enhancing the existing cycle network.
  • Dorking will benefit from a £800,000 sustainable transport package to improve the town's Dorking Deepdene railway station, although funding for this scheme will be allocated from FY 2016/17.
  • Proposed resilience schemes for improvements to the A23 and A217 have also been approved in principle, but funding is unlikely to be available before FY16/17.
  • A £4.9 million package of walking, cycling and bus improvements in Greater Redhill, focused on the A3/ A2044 and A217 routes between Redhill/ Reigate and Horley/Gatwick.

Commenting on the decisions, Ron Crank, chief executive of Coast to Capital said: "We are delighted that Coast to Capital is able to support improvements to Surrey's roads, rail and sustainable transport infrastructure. We hope these schemes will ease congestion and flooding on the county's roads, whilst encouraging local people to use sustainable transport where feasible."
