A £1.16 million from Coast to Capital will go towards the total cost of a bike hire scheme in Brighton with 430 bikes and 50 docking stations.

A grant of £1.16 million from Coast to Capital will go towards the total cost of a bike hire scheme in Brighton with 430 bikes and 50 docking stations.

The scheme will function much like the Santander Cycle Hire in London (popularly known as Boris Bikes), with the bicycles available for use across the Brighton area.

Martin Heffer, Coast to Capital's Board Member for infrastructure, said: "I'm extremely pleased to see this very important scheme approved by the Local Transport Body. Schemes such as Brighton Bike Share are at the forefront of encouraging a sustainable alternative means of travel in city centres. I am sure the scheme is something that will be warmly welcomed by Brighton's many tourists as well as those who need a fast, efficient, fun and healthy way of getting about their daily business in Brighton."

The project will significantly enhance accessibility to cycling to residents across the area covered by the scheme. Bike Share will help overcome mobility issues for non-car owners and the issue of limited cycling parking in the city centre, providing residents with access to bikes and a guaranteed parking space at both ends of the journey.

This scheme forms a key element of Coast to Capital's ambition to deliver walking and cycling improvements across the city to improve connectivity between developments, the City Centre, and more local district centres.

Docking stations will be located along the sea front, throughout the city centre, and up to the Falmer university campuses.
