West Sussex road schemes put forward for Government funding

The A284 Lyminster Bypass and the A259 Bognor Regis to Littlehampton Enhancement schemes are in the shortlist of ten priority schemes to improve the Major Road Network, each set to cost between £20m and £50m, submitted by Transport for the South East to Government on Wednesday. They will now go forward for consideration in the 2020-25 National Roads Fund programme.

 

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure Roger Elkins said: "The two West Sussex schemes are priorities for the County Council and a key part of the infrastructure package to support planned growth, and the delivery of new jobs and homes in Arun district.

 

"Transport for the South East brings together local authorities, including West Sussex County Council, and businesses to see how we can best work together to help shape and deliver our region's transport priorities. Having a strong transport network is vital for economic growth in the South East and will help to cut congestion and speed up journey times."

 

If funding is awarded from the Department for Transport, it will help towards the delivery of the ten priority schemes, alongside funding from other sources.

 

The A284 Lyminster Bypass was recently granted planning permission and is at an advanced stage of development. The A259 Corridor Improvement between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton is in the early concept stage. Following this submission, technical work and full stakeholder engagement will take place, with construction planned towards the end of the 2020-25 funding period.

 

Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership has also provided £3m funding towards the A284 Lyminster Bypass.
