The Environment Agency project team working on the £18 million Newhaven Flood Alleviation scheme recently gave up their free time to transform local charity's garden.

The Newhaven Foyer in Newhaven, East Sussex, is a modern housing development aimed at assisting 16-24 year olds experiencing homelessness. The Foyer is run by the Salvation Army Housing Association, and looks to transform the lives of young people from the local area, developing their skills, focusing on their talents and maximising their future potential. Their aim is to help individuals achieve independent living.

The garden at the Foyer was in real need of a makeover, so in true community spirit Environment Agency staff, flood scheme contractors and Sussex Community Development Association representatives all dug in to revamp the plot.

The volunteers were keen to get started and quickly rolled up their sleeves to begin a 3 hour gardening and building session, working hard to achieve the aspirations of the Foyer.

While the focus of the day was to improve the outside space at the Foyer, it was also an invaluable opportunity for volunteers to interact with the young people resident at the Foyer, and having a lot of fun in the process.

Working together to remove exotic plants, clear flowerbeds, plant seedlings, remove litter, erect trellis' for climbers and supports, and build a new bench from unused timber, the garden was dramatically improved by the partnership effort. All of the weeds are now gone, and flowers, plants and vegetables have all been planted ready to pop up over the coming months, ready to be viewed from the comfort of the newly erected garden bench.

Our environmental outcome days give staff the opportunity to take part in activities that enhance the environment, engage with communities or educate people about the environment.

A member of the Foyer staff said:

"The garden was truly transformed in an afternoon and the impact on the residents will be huge".
