Vice Chair (Business Representative)
Steve is Group Chief Executive of Friends of the Elderly, the national charity which operates care estates, provides befriending and welfare services and grants, delivers a wide range of public health and social care services in the community, and campaigns to alleviate the adverse impact of loneliness, isolation and financial crisis among older people.
Steve also brings significant commercial expertise to the Coast to Capital Board. He has lived and worked for extended periods in the USA, Europe, Scandinavia, Africa, India, South East Asia and the Middle East for a wide range of international trade clients, governments and NGOs. In 1990, he became Director of a subsidiary of Hambros Bank in the City of London, where he spent a decade leading multi-national consulting teams resolving sensitive boardroom and operational situations worldwide. This included reviewing and restructuring the Customs Agencies of several Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Member States.
Closer to home, in 2001, Steve founded Prime Care Community Services Ltd., where as Managing Director he led more than 1,000 employees in delivering award-winning health and social care services throughout the South of England through partnerships with local authorities and healthcare trusts. Backed by a combination of mezzanine and private equity funds, the organisation became the first in its sector nationally to achieve Investors in People Gold accreditation and also win the National Training Awards – and was regularly cited as a national exemplar in the development of its people and service. After 12 years Steve exited his investment in Prime Care to a national group of housing associations.
A former Police Officer, Steve studied Criminal Justice at Exeter University and holds a post-graduate Diploma in Risk Management from Loughborough University's School of Business & Economics. In his spare time, Steve is an Ambassador to the Sussex Community Foundation and holds a portfolio of other advisory roles and directorships.
