A section of the town is vulnerable to flooding from the River Adur as it sits on low-lying ground on the A259 (Brighton Road) alongside Sussex Yacht Club.
Adur District Council - working in partnership with West Sussex County Council, Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, the Environment Agency and Sussex Yacht Club - will be implementing a scheme to combat the threat from flooding from the river.
The Council is set to begin monitoring groundwater levels this summer with a series of tests which will help to finalise the detailed design of the new flood wall once the results have been collated. Work on the new wall is planned to be completed 2023.
Notices will be erected on hoardings where the new flood wall is to be built to keep residents and businesses up to date on the scheme.
Cllr Emma Evans, Adur's Executive Member for the Environment said: “The Council is totally committed to ensuring residents and businesses are as protected as possible in the future.
“We are now carrying out a detailed investigation to understand surface and groundwater movement underneath where the new flood wall is to be built in what is a very complex geographical area. Once this process has been completed we will move forward with improving flood defences.
“We will keep residents and businesses fully informed with the work as it progresses with detailed signage in the area.”
The Council purchased a 3.5m strip of land off Sussex Yacht Club in 2018 to enable the new flood defence and cycle path/footpath to be built.
