Work to transform Queens Square in Crawley will start on Monday 5 September.

Work to transform Queens Square will start on Monday 5 September.

Blakedown Landscapes Ltd, a multi award-winning landscaping and civil engineering company, was appointed in May and will work from plans drawn up by urban designers Burns + Nice, which were agreed last year and which will transform Queens Square into a high quality, distinctive, adaptable and enjoyable public space

This will in turn encourage neighbouring landowners and businesses to invest more in the area, acting as a catalyst for wider regeneration.

Work includes new high quality paving, new and improved lighting, new seating, new street furniture, new planting and a central focal point including an attractive plaza and decorative water feature.

Work is expected to be completed in summer 2017. The £3.2m regeneration plans are a joint project between Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and the Coast2Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.

The town centre and all shops will remain open for business during the works. Queensway and Parkside will be used by the contractors for access but will remain open at all times. However, some disruption is possible.

Councillor Peter Smith, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at Crawley Borough Council, said: "I can't wait to see work start in Queens Square.

"This is a key part of our town centre regeneration programme and it will transform the area, giving people even more reasons to spend time shopping and socialising in the square."

Louise Goldsmith, West Sussex County Council Leader, said: "One of our key priorities at the County Council is to boost the local economy.

Queens Square work to starts soon.

"This funding boost in Crawley is just one of many steps we are taking in order to strengthen and improve local communities and offers residents and businesses an improved place to live and work.

"This is yet another good example of what we can achieve with partnership working between organisations and I look forward to seeing this scheme progress."

Jonathan Sharrock, Chief Executive, Coast to Capital LEP, said: "It's important that we are able to breathe new life into town centres in the region and the redevelopment of Crawley's Queens Square is a prime example of how a regeneration scheme will act as a catalyst to attract new retail and development investment.

"We are very pleased to be supporting this exciting project, which has been awarded £1.5 million through the Local Growth Fund."
