Over a thousand attendees joined a virtual careers event last week to mark National Careers Week.

Funded by Coast to Capital LEP through the Local Hub Fund, 'Hello Future 2022’ was accessible for all schools and colleges across the Coast to Capital region.

All key stage and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) pupils were able to directly hear from local employers through a series of 45-minute sessions that covered a wide range of industries including finance, aviation, hospitality, construction and entrepreneurship.

The initiative was led by Kelly Parkhouse and Penny Daly, Enterprise Coordinators at Coast to Capital in collaboration with Albion in the Community, American Express, Brighton & Hove City Council, GetMyFirstJob.co.uk, Laing O’Rourke and Graphite Digital.

Lisa Mobbs, EAN and Careers Hub lead at Coast to Capital, said: “Hello Future 2022 has been an insightful and informative event for both young people and their parents/carers. It’s essential that parents/carers feel well-equipped to support their child and talk about their future. The range of employers who participated in the event really helped students in schools and colleges to understand the changing landscape of the world of work and our pre-recorded webinars enabled accessibility for the whole Coast to Capital region. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to ensure Hello Future continues to be an impactful and hugely successful event.”

There was also a live event aimed at parents and carers to provide guidance and advice for/to young people entering the workforce. Attendees heard from American Express, Gatwick Airport and Microsoft UK about how different career pathways are suited to different people and the support parents and carers need in making these decisions.

As well as raising awareness of varying career paths, Hello Future 2022 also explored the importance of work life balance, physical and mental wellbeing, and money management.

Georgina Angele, Regional Lead for the Southeast Region at The Careers and Enterprise Company, said: “It has never been more important to provide encounters, experiences and resources to help every young person take their best next step. There are many pathways for them to explore.  Tomorrow’s workforce needs to be creative, adaptable, and resilient and Hello Future enables young people to experience first-hand the choices available to them.”

Rob Josephs, Schools Manager at Albion in the Community said: “The new Hello Future recorded sessions bring a range of voices across varying career sectors to provide insight in the world of work for young people. The importance of raising awareness of key employability skills is vital in supporting young people and their families make informed choices about their future career paths and understanding what’s needed to be successful in the 21st century workplace.”

David Allison, Co-Founder and CEO of GetMyFirstJob said: “Hello-Future has once again helped to share the huge changes that we are seeing in the world of work with teachers, pupils, parents and carers. Employers have made fundamental changes to the way they work and the way they view employment skills in the last two years. The insight they provided as part of Hello Future 2022 helped to bring many of these changes to life for hundreds of people across the region.”
