Coast to Capital has welcomed the news that proposals for expansion at Gatwick Airport have been recognised by the Airports Commission.

Coast to Capital, the Local Enterprise Partnership for Brighton and Hove, Lewes, London Borough of Croydon, the Gatwick Diamond and West Sussex has welcomed the news that proposals for expansion at Gatwick Airport have been recognised by the Airports Commission.

The LEP's board of directors believe that Gatwick Airport is the best option for delivering additional airport capacity in the South East because of the economic advantage it can deliver through employment growth.

John Peel, Coast to Capital chairman, said: "We are very supportive of expansion at Gatwick Airport. We do, however, acknowledge that it must be delivered in association with a realistic and robust plan for managing the impacts on housing, public services, surface transport and the environment.

Ron Crank, chief executive, said: "The real debate starts now, not least on the environmental impacts and business case of each option. The jobs created by any regional growth in aviation need to be part of an economy with balanced skills and sustainable employment. We look forward to an ongoing dialogue with the team at Gatwick Airport as they develop their proposals in more detail."

A final recommendation will be delivered by the Davies Commission in 2015.
