Haywards Heath College has received valuable support ahead of its September 2020 opening.

The college, which is part of the Chichester College Group, has secured £1.2million Local Growth Funding from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The grant will be used to support the refurbishment and development of the Haywards Heath campus, ensuring the site's facilities will be ready for students starting at the college in September.

This includes buying specialist equipment for the college's science labs and classrooms, as well as kitting out the library and resources centre, furniture, IT equipment, and signage. It will also be used to set up the on-site theatre and sports centre.

Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chief Executive of the Chichester College Group, said:

"We are delighted to be awarded this funding which is critical in enabling us to open Haywards Heath College. Coast to Capital have provided invaluable support to this process.

"Whilst the new building at Haywards Heath is in good condition, this capital investment will help to facilitate the opening of the college and ensure that the facilities for students and the wider community are up-to-date and well-equipped.

"We are committed to providing high quality educational opportunities to young people across the Mid Sussex area at our new Haywards Heath College, and we are already seeing a lot of interest in the college from students and parents."

The funding is part of the Coast to Capital Local Growth Funding and Haywards Heath College is just one of a number of projects chosen as part of the LEP's ambition to boost the economy by giving people the skills they need to earn an income, allowing them to remain living in the area.

Jonathan Sharrock, Chief Executive at Coast to Capital said:

"We are delighted to award Local Growth Funding towards Haywards Heath College that will enhance the skills offer across the area. Creating skills for the future is a key priority at Coast to Capital and our Skills 360 Board continues to ensure our area is a place where young people are given the tools they need to join the modern workforce."

Haywards Heath College welcomed a huge number of prospective students at three busy open events in October, November and February, and has received hundreds of applications.

Paul Riley, Principal of Haywards Heath College, said:

"The college has, to date, received more than 500 applications from prospective students for courses starting in September - which is incredible.

"We are still receiving applications and we have started holding our course guidance meetings to interview potential students about their course choices.

"We are also looking forward to welcoming visitors to our next open event, which students and their families an opportunity to visit the site, meet our team and find out about studying at the college."
