In line with Government's Industrial Strategy, 2017, Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership is currently working with partners to develop a Local Industrial Strategy. In December 2018, Government announced that Coast to Capital will take part in Wave 3 of Local Industrial Strategy negotiations. Government has set a target for all Local Industrial Strategies to be published by March 2020.

Our Local Industrial Strategy must align with the 5 Foundations of Productivity which are identified in the Industrial Strategy as: Ideas, People, Infrastructure, Place and Business Environment. In addition to the above, it must address some or all of the 4 Grand Challenges identified as: Artificial Intelligence & Data, Clean Growth, Future of Mobility and Ageing Society.

The Local Industrial Strategy will be produced through negotiation between Coast to Capital and Government; agreeing an evidence-based understanding of how the regional economy works and the specific opportunities that it presents. Our Strategic Economic Plan, Gatwick 360°, 2018, was the starting point for this, with further research now commissioned to complete our evidence base, as follows:

  • Metro Dynamics - will undertake research into the 'innovation ecosystem' across the Coast to Capital area, looking at how this can address specific opportunities in Government's Grand Challenges;

Urban Centres Prioritisation - to help identify a list of ambitious town centres that should be prioritised for further LEP and Government engagement. All Local Authorities will receive a separate written letter from Coast to Capital explaining the timescale and process and informing them of meeting dates;

Commercial Property Study - to assess the supply and demand of commercial space across the region;

Skills and Labour Market Research - this project will gain valuable intelligence and build an evidence base of current and future demand for and supply of skills within the area;

  • The Fifth Sector - are undertaking a digital connectivity research project for our area, bringing together existing data and pipeline projects.

As part of our commitment to engage with all our partners and be fully transparent in delivering the LIS, we are sharing this information with our key stakeholders so that they are aware of our research programme. Please be aware that these consultants may be engaging with your organisations in order to gain further insight into your respective local areas.

Key to the success of the above research projects, the consultants will be conducting interviews with a variety of private and public sector partners. Coast to Capital will develop an interview list and will make the necessary introductions to the consultants. Further details on the consultants and the individual projects will be shared with those partners that are confirmed for interviews. We want to ensure that our partners are aware of these projects and that there is a coordinated approach to the interviews.
